Chaela is a female artist based in Brighton, gearing up for the launch of her single Neon. With a compelling voice, she has left fans wanting more just from the teasers she has released via social media. I caught up with her to talk about the upcoming release, her style and current issues within the industry.

Hi Chaela. How would you describe your sound to people?

I’d say it was a fusion of Electro-pop and House music. I like my songs to be exciting melodically, but at the same time focus on the lyrics, as they’re my favourite part to write. I suppose it could be seen as a combination of more modern, ambient sounds with a classical song-writer lyrical structure.

Your song preview for Neon showcases your powerful voice. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I’m a huge fan of Sia’s voice and love that raw, husky quality she has. Amy Winehouse is also a massive vocal influence. I come from a musical theatre background, so I think that’s definitely had an effect in terms of my projection and vibrato. I’m trying to steer away from that though.

Your song highlights such a Summertime vibe, is this something you were aiming for?

Yeah absolutely. I think everyone loves having that tune that reminds them of summer. I remember back in 2012 that summer song for me was “Heatwave” by Wiley. I was listening to that the other day when we had that bit of sunshine, it just instantly makes you think of having BBQs and pool parties. With Neon, I was definitely going for that beach vibe so I’m glad that has come across.

Why did you choose Chaela to be the name you perform under?

It was just one of things that sounded right. I think the name “Michaela” could work, but I prefer the idea of “Chaela” being two syllables and easier to say. Something about the spelling of it just felt right in the artwork.

How would you describe your sense of style?

I’m pretty laid back and like to wear jeans and flats. However, I like dressing up when I’m performing at gigs or going out and I’ll put myself through the trauma of heels as I’m kind of short. I’m a bit obsessed with glitter. I remember waking up the morning at V-Fest and I could hardly open my eyes because they were almost glued shut with glitter and I’m pretty sure I was still finding glitter in my hair for weeks after.

What would be your go-to gig outfit, to wear when performing?

I’m a fan of playsuits, as they are super comfy and cute. So, maybe a black playsuit, block heels and some sort of bright, colourful bomber jacket. It is important to be comfy though, so you can relax and have fun with it. I remember climbing on a table when I was performing once and had to wait until the end of the song to get down because I couldn’t in my heels.

Being a female, do you think women are represented enough within the music industry?

I think females have been represented a lot more in recent years but there is still a way to go. It obviously goes without saying that people have a lot of time and respect for acts such as Adele, Beyoncé and Ariana Grande. Females do tend to grab a lot of headlines but not always in a positive way, which is a shame. It would be good to see more female songwriters and producers. That side of the industry tends to be more male dominated.

With the Me Too campaign being such a massive subject this year, do you think more needs to be done to protect women at gigs?

Yes, always. It’s a shame that it’s got to the point where it is an actual subject needing to be addressed. But the fact it has been brought to light more is a positive thing and a lot more people are now aware of it.

As festival season approaches, what advice would you give to people attending festivals this year?

Wear glitter, but not too much. Always make sure you stay hydrated, especially if you’re drinking lots of alcohol. Having a portable phone charger is a really good shout as you’ll probably be using up loads of battery from taking photos and videos.

As Summer begins, what else can we expect from Chaela?

I’m going to be writing loads over the summer and that will hopefully lead to another single release very soon. I also want to focus on the gigging side and start playing around Brighton. Performing is the best way to reach out to people. The idea of having people come to watch your music being performed is such an exhilarating feeling and I’m excited to do more of it.
