On Friday, 'The Japanese House' took over pretty much every single tweet on my Twitter feed. While I previously knew nothing about 'The Japanese House' other than being on the Dirty Hit Record label ( home to the 1975, Wolf Alice) I was compelled to see what all the fuss was about after reading so many positive comments about latest release ' Good at Falling.'
'The Japanese house' is the project of British Singer- songwriter Amber Bain. ' Good at Falling' is her debut album, after beginning to write music as ' The Japanese House' in 2015. The spellbinding album encapsulates everything you would expect from someone who had hidden their identify through the start of their career: Behind all the noise, there is a softness.
The 'unlikely pop star,' Bain's lyrics bring the story of personal events to life. Much like the scribbles in a teenagers diary, each songs lyrics feel as though they have been lifted from the bedroom and delicately pieced together with the melodies that embody them.
While the album starts with a sense of confusion, with the almost robotic tone that creates 'Went to meet her,' it is not long until you find yourself on the journey of heartache and hope with Bain. Tracks such as ' You seemed so happy' take simple guitar and layer instrument on instrument until the track becomes something seemingly complicated, almost like the confusion of the situation of the track ( written about a friend who has died.) The lyrics of 'Follow My Girl ' "Nothing feels good, it's not right" make for a memorable listen as Bain spills emotions that we can each relate to. The floaty melody that surrounds 'Lilo' acts as a reminder that everything will be okay in the end.
The album has been intricately created as a masterpiece which is best enjoyed if listening to collectively. 'The Japanese house' has taken some time to get to the release of ' Good at Falling' but the wait has paid off as it will be unsurprising if this album, full of sad anthems, claims a spot as one of the best releases of the year.
