You Me at Six are on track to receive a Number One record in the UK after the release of their highly anticipated seventh studio album, SUCKAPUNCH.
SUCKAPUNCH feels like a more artistically mature album than previous releases, while still encompassing everything you would expect from the British Rock band: easily digestible lyrics, punchy riffs and instantly memorable choruses.
The album starts with angsty track 'Nice to Me,' setting the tone of the album, before jumping into 'MAKEMEFEELALIVE' which introduces the apparent darkness that continues through the album. This darkness is seamlessly interwoven with the high energy of the melody, with lead singer Josh Franceschi shouting " Make me feel alive/ I'm so fucking dead inside." While these lyrics are reminiscent of similar thoughts that the band wrote as teens, each track highlights a more sophisticated approach than anything they have released before, heavily highlighting their strength to allow the instruments to lead the tracks, notably the intricacy of drum beats changing the course of a song.
SUCKAPUNCH feels like an album in which has seen the band take risks, allowing themselves to introduce their own personal music influences; there are underlying but obvious elements of Dance and Hip-Hop filtered through with the use of synths throughout. Perhaps this is a sign of a band who have been in the business long enough, feeling comfotable enough to produce the music that they would now listen to.
You Me At Six have always been known for including a token love song, and 'Glasgow' does not disappoint. While the lyrics appear relatively simple in regards to a typical heartbreak song, it's Franceschi's sombre delivery that makes the song a stand out hit, bound to appeal to live crowds as previous love anthems 'Crash' and 'Take on the World' have.
After the release of XI, You Me At Six could have settled down. XI could have comfortably secured the band sound, but it feels as though they have chosen to rip up the rule book and reinvent once more with SUCKAPUNCH. Final track 'What's It Like' feels like a reminder of that. The band have successfully found the balance of flawlessly mixing genres to create Rock tracks that while conventional on paper, pack a punch underneath. You Me At Six have cracked the formula, leaving them on full speed to success.
